Sometimes food just seems to taste better when you’re out in the fresh air. And early October is a wonderful time of year in Muskoka. This year, “What’s Cooking Bracebridge” is presenting two outdoor events which are sure to be energetic and full of fun.
Street food enjoys a long history, hearkening back to ancient Greece and Rome and finding many variations in the cultures and regions of the world. From Thailand’s spicy noodles to New York’s iconic hot dogs to the chestnut crepes of Paris, street food adds a glorious layer to dining pleasures. Toronto has discovered the magic of marvellous street food, with a growing number of food trucks offering a variety of ethnic and national dishes. One of the most recognizable of the city’s street-food brands, Fidel Gastro’s, was launched by Matt Basile—an entrepreneur who is also host of the TV show ‘Rebel Without a Kitchen’; owner of Lisa Marie, a restaurant on Queen Street West; and co-author of ‘Street Food Diaries’ published by Penguin Canada. Matt has travelled widely to research a range of interesting dishes, and then he puts his own creative twist on his favourites. “What’s Cooking Bracebridge” is proud to include Matt in the line-up of celebrity culinary artists. He’s serving up some fabulous food (Alabama Tailgaters, Roasted Corn Salsa, Double Salsa Verde Cheeseburgers, Grilled Peaches with Nutella Ginger Cream), along with just the right craft beer from Muskoka Brewery at the Griffin Pub on October 3. Matt is also sharing his secret meatball recipe on October 4 in a hands-on, interactive class at Gagnon’s Your Independent Grocer.
- And, going from the frypan to the fire … Take the family to an outside gourmet kitchen at Santa’s Whispering Pines Campground on October 4, where managers Kevin and Sarah North-Harris are preparing some outdoor treats at the fire for you to sample. There will be flavoursome camp-style beans cooked long and slow over the tripod; edible freezer packs that do double-duty as a cooler and a meal; and ‘Dad’s Apples’ which can serve as a dessert or a tasty breakfast. You can also take your place at the fire to create a special dessert that rivals even the most beloved s’mores. ‘Banana Dream Boats’ are easy for kids to make, and totally delicious. Kevin and Sarah love working with children, having three of their own plus backgrounds in Guiding and Scouting. They enjoy transforming campfire meals into an exciting adventure, adding to the rich experience of outdoor living.
